Reggio is known as the City of the Tricolour, since the national flag of Italy was created there on January 7th, 1797. Today, a Museum dedicated to the Tricolour flag illustrates the history of the unification of Italy through a display of historical artefacts and multimedia instruments.
Reggio is a city of art, thanks to its interesting City Museums, the Parmeggiani gallery and three theatres (Valli, Ariosto and Cavallerizza) that host concerts, musicals and drama, dance, opera seasons every year.
Reggio is also a city of photography. It has been hosting the Festival of European Photography since 2006: an event that involves the whole community as well as celebrities and young talents; the festival is dedicated to the memory of Luigi Ghirri, a famous photographer from Reggio, whose archive is kept in the Panizzi library.
The town of Brescello (RE), where the iconic Don Camillo film series was shot, is just 30 kilometres away from Remilia Hotel. The main square, the streets and two museums in town still host memorabilia of the films. The river port of Boretto, from which you can take a boat and enjoy a cruise on the Po river, is a few minutes away from there.
Matilda of Canossa (1046 – 1115) was one of the most fascinating historical figures of the Middle Ages; highly educated and powerful, she acted as a mediator in the disputes between the Pope and the Emperor. She spent her childhood at the Castle of Canossa (30 km away from the Hotel), whose suggestive ruins are still standing today and where the famous episode of the Humiliation of Canossa took place in 1077; she lived for a long time in the Castle of Bianello (23 km away), where she was crowned Viceroy of Italy by the Holy Roman Emperor Henry V.
The surroundings of Reggio Emilia have been inhabited by humans since thousands of years ago. That is proved by the remains of Terramara Santa Rosa: A Bronze Age settlement in the town of Poviglio (20 km away from the Hotel). In Scandiano, 20 km away, it is possible to admire the Boiardo Fortress, which belonged to the family of the Renaissance poet Matteo Maria Boiardo.
The tormented painter Antonio Ligabue lived in Gualtieri, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy (25 km away); many of his works are on display in the imposing Palazzo Bentivoglio.
Like the other cities built by the Romans along the Via Emilia, Reggio was conceived to be less than a day’s walk (around 30-40 km) away from the neighbouring towns. That is why it is still easy to reach the principal centres of the region from there:
Reggio Emilia is one of the only five provinces in Italy where authentic PDO Parmigiano Reggiano, one of the tastiest long-ripened cheeses in the world, is produced. The city is also home of PDO Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Reggio Emilia, made of grape mash aged in barrels made of different woods for a long time. You cannot visit Reggio Emilia without trying Erbazzone, a savoury pie made of puff pastry filled with chard and Parmigiano,

The Ariosto shopping centre is about one kilometre away from Remilia Hotel. It includes a large supermarket, several kinds of stores, a pharmacy and a dental clinic.
I Petali shopping centre, which includes tens of stores and a multiplex movie theatre, is just two kilometres away from the Hotel, beside the Mapei stadium; the Virgin Active Fitness Village is in the same building as the mall.
5 miles away from the Hotel you can find La Meridiana, with its 30 stores available to satisfy any shopping need.
Fashion lovers who appreciate design clothes can visit Fidenza Village, one of Italy’s most popular outlet villages, which is about 50 km away; and Mantova outlet village at about 60 km.
The Mapei – Città del Tricolore football stadium is within walking distance from the Hotel (2 km). It hosts the matches of AC Reggiana and Sassuolo Calcio, and so is the Virgin Active Fitness Village (2 km), which includes a 25-m swimming pool, gym halls for different classes and activities (Pilates, Yoga, dance, cardio fitness…) and a wellness area equipped with whirlpool tubes, a steam room and a Kneipp path.
Golf lovers can play on the 9-hole courses of Reggio Emilia Golf club, 11 km away from the Hotel. The club is part of the Italian Golf Federation and includes two different courses and a practice area.
The public park “Parco del Crostolo” is right outside the city, 7 kilometres away from the Hotel: a natural oasis between the creek and the low hills, which includes equipped trails and cycle paths.
The Eco Park in Vezzano (20 km away), on the first hills of the Apennines, is a reserve of biodiversity where visitors can enjoy a walk and observe the different plants, animals and rocks.
The Ca’ del Vento Trail in the municipality of Albinea (20 km away) can be travelled by foot or by bike. It is included in the list of Sites of Community Importance established by the EU, since it comprises the Messinian Gypsums (characteristic geological formations that give shape to caves and dolines) as well as prehistoric and medieval settlements. Even Dante Alighieri was impressed by Pietra di Bismantova (“the rock of Bismantova”, 50 km away). In fact, the site is really worth a visit: you can take one of the paths marked by the Italian Alpine Club to have a walk-in the woods and enjoy the view from the grassy top of the table-shaped mountain. You can also practice at the local climbing gym or visit the Sanctuary below the mountain. Cerwood, the largest adventure park in Italy, is 60 kilometres away from the Hotel. It proposes over 200 activities and adventure paths with different difficulty levels, surrounded by the woods.
